02. Installation and update

Русский

DL20 is installed on a machine in two ways — the installer or unpacking the portable archive; both produce the same program. The program offers updates itself when it finds a new version.

How to install

  1. Download the package: the installer DL20-<version>-win64.exe (installs the program into %ProgramFiles%\DL and places a shortcut in the Start menu) or the portable ZIP (unpack anywhere).
  2. The installer is not code-signed — on first run Windows shows the blue SmartScreen window "Windows protected your PC". Click "More info", then "Run anyway".
  3. Go through the setup wizard (license, install folder) — the VC++ redistributable and the Vulkan Runtime are installed together with the program.
  4. The portable variant installs nothing into the system: unpack the archive and run bin\dl_composition.exe directly.

If the installer finds a running DL20

Before removing the files of a previous version, the installer and uninstaller check whether DL20 is already running from the target folder. If it is, a dialog appears: "DL20 is currently running. Close it and click Retry." (in English and Russian): close the program and click Retry — the installation continues as usual. Cancelling the dialog stops the installation without deleting or copying anything.

ABOUT row at the bottom of the SETTINGS screen: SEND FEEDBACK button on the left and the version label
"DL20 0.8.42 (Debug)" on the right — the INSTALL UPDATE button appears in the same place once an update
is found; in the screenshot no update is found, so it is not visible

How to update

  1. The program checks the manifest on the server (Ed25519 signature, package SHA-256) on launch and periodically while running; on finding a new version it shows the INSTALL UPDATE <version> badge once per version in the top bar and the same button in SETTINGS → ABOUT.
  2. Click INSTALL UPDATE — a dialog opens with the new version number, the current version, and the release notes; Yes/No buttons (No is selected by default).
  3. Yes starts the download — the button shows progress in megabytes. After the download, another confirmation dialog appears: Yes closes DL20 and launches the new version's installer automatically. If the project has unsaved changes, the program asks whether to save them before the installer starts; Cancel does not start the installer, and DL20 keeps running. The dialog and the installer belong to the version whose download you started: if the program finds an even newer version during the download, the badge shows the newer one, but the downloaded one is verified and installed (since 0.8.91; before that, such a check during the download could reject a correct file as damaged). The version you answered Yes to is the one downloaded, even if the program found another one while the question was open (since 0.8.91).
  4. The status line in SETTINGS → ABOUT updates on every check, including a manual one, even when no update is found.

Logs and autosave

The program writes the session log to %LOCALAPPDATA%\DL\logs\ and autosaves the project every 30 seconds to %LOCALAPPDATA%\DL\autosave\ — more on this and on recovery after a crash on the page about the project and diagnostics.

Limitations

  • The installer is not signed (Authenticode) — hence the SmartScreen warning on first run.
  • The update server has no TLS (bare IP); the integrity of the update package is protected by the manifest signature (Ed25519) and SHA-256, not by HTTPS.
